PHAGEinLYON is the therapeutic bacteriophage programme of Hospices Civils de Lyon (HCL), bringing together infectious disease physicians, microbiologists, pharmacists, researchers and clinicians to support the clinical implementation of phage therapy in France.
Established in 2017, the programme was created to rebuild a complete public therapeutic bacteriophage ecosystem encompassing phage isolation, characterization, pharmaceutical manufacturing, clinical evaluation and patient treatment. Through a multidisciplinary approach, PHAGEinLYON supports personalized bacteriophage therapy, translational research and the development of regulated therapeutic phage production.
In 2026, the programme reached a major milestone when HCL became the first public healthcare institution in France and the European Union authorized by the French National Agency for Medicines and Health Products Safety (ANSM) to manufacture therapeutic bacteriophages under Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards for human use.
